Today is my birthday.
Today is my birthday and I had hoped to write a blog post about all the things I know now that I didn’t know when I was younger. I’ve been staring at a white screen for five days completely uninspired to write anything. So I’ve changed my tactic and decided to write about what I want for my birthday. One of my best friends asked me the other day, “what he could get me for my birthday that would be special?”. I sat there and thought for a second then gave the only answer that has ever made any sense to me. “To make it to my next one.”
This may not make sense to a lot of people considering that I am a healthy 36-year-old woman living in the country of entitlement. The chances of me not making it to my next birthday are pretty slim but still it’s my wish. It’s my wish because I haven’t always been a healthy young woman. Some of you may know this and some of you may not, but when I was 27 I was diagnosed with cancer. And while my cancer may not have ever been life-threatening it was life-changing. Up until that point I had taken life and health for granted, as most in their 20s do. I got scared and not just a little scared, terrified. In one pivotal moment of my life everything changed, in that one instant I realized something that most people don’t realize until it’s too late. Life, is incredibly short.
I bring this up because I’ve begun noticing the older I get how people look at you every birthday with that sad look on their face and say,
“How you doing, you OK with it”?
Of course I’m OK with it, I’m alive for God sakes! I’m actually still not 100% healthy. I have a tumor on my pituitary gland that has made for some interesting dinner conversation at a recent Longmire gathering with executives from Netflix and Warner Bros. That’s a whole other blog post!
The truth of the matter is, as women, the older we get the more we feel like we’re not supposed to look the way that we look. The lines on our faces, the gray hair you may start to notice in the bathroom mirror, that really small pair of pants you were saving because you knew that one day you’d fit into them! I’m here to say….STOP the madness! Seriously! I love getting older…..Let me say that one more time for emphasis! I LOVE GETTING OLDER! Every day, week, month, year is a gift that not everyone gets, and one day neither will you. So embrace those lines. I love my laugh lines…..they mean I smile….a lot!!
I still may fit in the same size I wore in high school, but I work damn hard at it….and they DO NOT fit the same way! Trust me….my body has shifted, and that’s awesome! I mean thank God for a good bra and a pair of heels that make your ass look tighter, but that shifting is a blessing. I remember my favorite place as a kid was laying on my mom’s boobs….those were not 20 year old boobs, they were mom boobs, and they were (and still are, when I need it) the safest place in the world. You have to shift, that’s life. You GET to shift. What a blessing! And that grey hair that will eventually blossom into more.
Bring it on life! I got this!
I hope I’m 98 years old and pass away peacefully in my sleep after a lifetime of love and laughter. We should all be so lucky. And the only way to get to that, is to age.
It’s funny, when we’re young we can’t wait to get older, and once were older we wish we were young again.
So I guess that’s what I’ve learned. Don’t wish your life away but always remember how fragile and short it is. Every day you can wake up and kiss a person you love, feel the calmness from an animal, hear a child’s laughter, learn from the wisdom of your elders, or help a stranger, that’s a good day. Embrace life and all its changes.
Ask a child what their favorite thing about you is, or a person on their deathbed….I promise it won’t be how young you’ve always looked. There has never been a tombstone that read…”Here lies So and So, Damn this bitch looked good!” That’s not to say I don’t have a dermatologist on speed dial, I do, and he’s awesome! I know what it’s like to want to put, what you feel is your best self out there. So do what makes you happy, it’s your life and your journey, make it count. But always try to remember this….
Death and taxes….pretty much inevitable. They will both get you at some point.
Martin Luther King, Jr said “I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”
Character, it’s an interesting thing. It’s how you will be known while you’re alive and how you’ll be remembered after you’re gone.
Your happiness, struggles, your heart ache and pain, your successes and your triumphs, your failures and your misfortunes. The way you stand up to adversity, your own and for those less fortunate. How you stand back up when you get knocked down. How you fight against injustices and prejudice, human rights, animal rights, and equal rights. The person you choose to be on a daily basis…. That is your character.
So for my birthday, I hope that I get another one…and another one,
and another one,
and another one. So I have as much time as possible to leave this world better than how I found it. For my birthday I wish for everyone, every nationality, every gender, every race, every religion and every sexual orientation, for the people walking the right path and the people on the wrong, I wish for strong character. And maybe, just maybe, that starts with a few wrinkles.
There are certain questions I get asked all the time; what’s my workout routine, am I a natural blonde, what was Starbuck, what’s my beauty regiment – things I get asked so much that I feel I need to actually answer them en mass. And while I still promise you I have no idea what Starbuck was (thanks Ron Moore) I can – and have – decided I should start answering some of the others.
I started with an easy and relevant one since I am currently filming Longmire. The question people ask all the time is:
You look like you don’t wear any makeup on the show….how do I get the same look? What makeup does your makeup artist use for Longmire? Basically “What is in Vic Moretti’s makeup bag?”
This is what my makeup artist uses on me for Longmire every day.
CLE’ DE PEAU-Shiseido
I’m a combination of #20 and #30 depending how tan I am. I find that most skin complexions are never right on the number no matter what brand, department store to drug store, 5$-200$. I suggest having a few colors on hand that are on either side of your natural skin tone. That way you can blend depending on the seasons and healthy sun exposure.
We love the way this looks on camera and holds in place all day.
*Silky Cream Foundation in 030
*Cream Foundation with SPF 29 in 020
*LashBlast Volume in black
No matter how long I’m in this business I always come back to Cover Girl Mascara! Can’t go wrong! I’ve been a Cover Girl since I was 15.
This stuff works so well on my chapped skin. My characters jeans are so tight that sometimes I need a very thick barrier cream on my tush…don’t laugh! Tight jeans can chafe! They also have a great line of many other products…you should definitely give them a look.
MAKE UP FOREVER
*HD Cream blush in color 315
I really like the way a cream blush looks on my face…it gives you a youthful glow.
*Creme Mains 20% for dry skin
Love this on my hands….in all the different smells. They come in perfect travel size tubes as well so I can always have one in my purse when I travel. It’s a must have!
*Waterproof brow set in Color Emphatically Blonde
*Paints Cream Eyeshadow in Bamboom
*Pro Longwear eyeliner in Rich Experience
*Gimme Brow in color light/medium
*Baby lips soft 20….Vic is obsessed with this! Seriously you should see me apply! It’s like I’m going for the most applied Chapstick of the year award! For my personal use they have an array of different shades but for Vic….clear.
Great sunscreen to go under my makeup. There’s no chemicals either!
This sunscreen is ***REEF SAFE***!! We have to use better sunscreen to protect our oceans! This is a great one.
And to wash it all off
in the morning I use the
*Facial Fuel energizing Face wash….it’s from their men’s line, but who doesn’t want caffeine on their face every morning? Hello!! Good morning face!
At night after work I use the
*Clearly Corrective foaming Cleanser….it’s perfect to get the makeup off but still gentle enough to not irritate.
*Muslin/Gauze Face Cloths
This is a line of products for babies out of New Zealand, I’m obsessed! When I have kids I’ll use even more of their products, but for now, the washcloths are amazing! I use them every day.
At home I also use their
I truly love this company! If you know anyone having a baby or with kids and you need a great gift idea! Their product line is fantastic and everything is designed and sourced with your baby in mind. All you moms and dads should check it out, seriously! I wish I was small enough to fit in some of their Merino baby/kid clothes.
That’s all for now. Check back soon for the next question to be answered….and no I won’t ever be able to tell you what Starbuck was.
